Podzemna gasifikacija uglja u Svetu poslednjih decenija doživljava znatnu ekspanziju u istraživanju i razvoju zbog uveliko iskorišćenih ležišta uglja i loših ekoloških efekata (pri sagorevanju u TE) na životnu okolinu.
Srbija ima znatne rezerve uglja, a kada bi se za PGU koristile samo vanbilansne rezerve i otkopni ostaci bilansnih, jasno je kakvi bi bili ekonomski (a i energetski i ekološki) efekti.
U radu su sagledane aktivnosti u Svetu na tom planu, pa smatramo da ima smisla i potrebe za primenu ove tehnologije u našim uslovima.

In the World's last decades, Underground Coal Gasification occurs significant expansion under research and development for the sake of huge utilization of coal deposits and bad ecological effects (in combustion in Power Plants) on the environment.
Serbia has substantial coal deposits, and if UCG used only off-balance deposits and excavation remains of balance deposits, it is obvious what economically (also environmentally and energetically)
effects it would carry.
In the research, we were looking for activities in the World about UCG, so we think that using UCG in our conditions has a purpose and make sense.
