Hyperpycnites within the Devonian-Carboniferous flysch of the Carpatho-Balkanides (Kostadinovica, eastern Serbia)
Miloš Radonjić (2020)This study presents new discoveries of vascular plants and the trace fossil Dictyodora liebeana (GEINITZ) from the Devonian–Carboniferous Kučaj-Zvonce flysch of the Carpatho-Balkanides and the implications of this fossil association for its sedimentary setting. The occurrence of the described plant debris in a deep-marine environment indicates the presence of hyperpycnites within the siliciclastic turbidites exposed at the Kostadinovica locality.
Late and post-collisional tectonic evolution of the Adria-Europe suture in the Vardar Zone
The Vardar Zone is a product of the Triassic-Jurassic opening of the Neotethys, Jurassic obduction, Late Cretaceous/Paleogene consumption of the oceanic crust and continental collision. During the last process, the Eastern Vardar Zone was thrust over the Central and eventually both onto the Western Vardar Zone. Hydrochemistry of groundwater contaminated by petroleum hydrocarbons: the impact of biodegradation (Vitanovac, Serbia)
Nenad Marić, Jana Štrbački, Sanja Mrazovac Kurilić, Vladimir P. Beškoski, Zoran Nikić, Snežana Ignjatović, Jovana Malbašić (2020)Aquifer contamination by petroleum hydrocarbons leads to measurable changes of groundwater hydrochemistry, primarily due to the microbiological activity. This study analyzes this phenomenon at an historical kerosene-contaminated site in Vitanovac (central Serbia). Due to the long-term hydrocarbon contamination and exposure to aerobic and anaerobic biodegradation mechanisms, the lowest concentrations of O2, NO3−, and SO42− (electron acceptors) and the highest concentrations of Mn and Fe (products of microbial metabolic activity) overlap. The terminal redox-accepting processes in groundwater ranged from oxygen ...Nenad Marić, Jana Štrbački, Sanja Mrazovac Kurilić, Vladimir P. Beškoski, Zoran Nikić, Snežana Ignjatović, Jovana Malbašić. Waste rocks and medieval slag as sources of environmental pollution in the area of the Pb-Zn Mine Rudnik (Serbia)
Alena Zdravković, Vladica Cvetković, Kristina Šarić, Aleksandar Pačevski, Aleksandra Rosić, Suzana Erić (2020)The new geochemical and mineralogical data of soil and water from the Pb-Zn Rudnik Mine area (central Serbia) reveal that the areas close to the mining sites and those located remotely from them are both affected by significant pollution by toxic elements, especially As, Pb, Ni and Cr. We, therefore, propose that two main sources are generally responsible for the current state of pollution in this area. Asbestos-Based Pottery from Corsica: The First Fiber-Reinforced Ceramic Matrix Composite
Asbestos-containing pottery shards collected in the northeast of Corsica (Cap Corse) and dating from the 19th century, or earlier, have been analyzed by SEM-EDS, XRPD, FTIR and Raman microspectroscopy. Blue (crocidolite) and white (chrysotile) asbestos fiber bundles are observed in cross-sections. Most of the asbestos is partly or totally dehydroxylated, and some transformation to forsterite is observed to occur, indicative of a firing above 800 C. Examination of freshly fractured pieces shows a nonbrittle fracture with fiber pull-out, consistent with ...... microscopy, a noninvasive and mobile technique, in identifying, residues testifying to nondomestic, chemical and metallurgical uses in the case of these ceramics. A sorting, of useful shards for additional analyses can therefore be done on site, in museum reserves or on excavation sites. Author ...
