Hydrochemical indicators of groundwater flow in the area of “Čukaru Peki” Cu-Au underground mine in eastern Serbia
The physical and chemical properties of groundwater, together with the groundwater levels regime and rock hydraulic properties, are often used to understand and conceptualize the hydrogeological system. Prediction of the influence of mining works on groundwater, and vice versa, is a challenge due to significantly altered groundwater flow patterns in the raw materials exploitation areas in relation to natural conditions. Therefore, multiple parameters are assessed and monitored before and during exploitation to properly characterize and quantify the system for ...Nebojša Atanacković, Vladimir Živanović, Jana Štrbački, Veselin Dragišić, Ivana Cvejić. Nebojša Atanacković, Jana Štrbački, Vladimir Živanović, Jelena Davidović, Sunčica Gardijan, Saša Stojadinović (2024)Discriminant analysis was applied to a baseline groundwater quality data set to develop a model for sourcing groundwater inrush into underground mining works. Such inrush events compromise the safety of the working environment and the feasibility of mining; thus, a comprehensive characterization of the hydrogeological system is required. In this study, a statistical model for groundwater sourcing was developed and validated based on a dataset of 179 groundwater chemical analyses related to the “Čukaru Peki” Cu–Au underground mine in ...Nebojša Atanacković, Jana Štrbački, Vladimir Živanović, Jelena Davidović, Sunčica Gardijan, Saša Stojadinović.
Bio-electrochemical potential and mineralogy of metal rich acid mining lake sediment: the “Robule” lake case study
Nebojša Atanacković, Alena Zdravković, Jana Štrbački, Sabina Kovač, Vladimir Živanović, Katarina Batalović, Srđan Stanković (2024)Mining for base metals and some critical raw materials is associated with acid, sulphate, and metal-rich waters (AMD). At the points where these waters are accumulated or discharged, the secondary minerals are precipitated, mostly iron-oxyhydroxides, forming characteristic orange sediments toxic to the environment. The sediment or sludge is prone to leaching of metals and sulphate, thus requiring proper disposal to maintain the waste stability. In this study, we assessed the AMD lake “Robule” sediment electrochemical properties and associated mineralogy ...Nebojša Atanacković, Alena Zdravković, Jana Štrbački, Sabina Kovač, Vladimir Živanović, Katarina Batalović, Srđan Stanković. Hydrochemistry of groundwater contaminated by petroleum hydrocarbons: the impact of biodegradation (Vitanovac, Serbia)
Nenad Marić, Jana Štrbački, Sanja Mrazovac Kurilić, Vladimir P. Beškoski, Zoran Nikić, Snežana Ignjatović, Jovana Malbašić (2020)Aquifer contamination by petroleum hydrocarbons leads to measurable changes of groundwater hydrochemistry, primarily due to the microbiological activity. This study analyzes this phenomenon at an historical kerosene-contaminated site in Vitanovac (central Serbia). Due to the long-term hydrocarbon contamination and exposure to aerobic and anaerobic biodegradation mechanisms, the lowest concentrations of O2, NO3−, and SO42− (electron acceptors) and the highest concentrations of Mn and Fe (products of microbial metabolic activity) overlap. The terminal redox-accepting processes in groundwater ranged from oxygen ...Nenad Marić, Jana Štrbački, Sanja Mrazovac Kurilić, Vladimir P. Beškoski, Zoran Nikić, Snežana Ignjatović, Jovana Malbašić.
